The Trios of Technology and Innovation Management: A Review
from a Strategic Perspective
Summary
This paper draws on three perspectives of strategic management - voluntarism,
determinism, and interactionism - to review the studies of innovation and technology
management (TIM) in Taiwan from 2000 through 2014.
TIM is an emerging yet fast-growing discipline. Since the late 1980s, it has created an
independent and autonomous academic community in the wake of dramatic changes in
industry structures and economic conditions. In the 1990s, Taiwanese scholars started to
construct an academic community to encourage the studies of TIM. At that time, the Institute
of Management of Technology at National Chiao Tung University and the Chinese Society
for Management of Technology (CSMOT) were established. Since then, Taiwanese scholars
have published many articles in international journals such as
Research Policy, R&D
Management, Technovation
, and
Technological Forecasting and Social Change
. Thus, it is
important to review its development in Taiwan, and we provide practical suggestions based
on the insights from our review for future research, particularly in the Taiwanese context.
There are two illustrations of TIM, the first of which is engineering-based. For example,
the
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management
has published articles on innovation,
R&D management, and technology management, but from the perspective of industrial
engineering. In contrast, the second illustration is management-based. For instance, the TIM
Division of the Academy of Management (AOM) is devoted to interdisciplinary scholarship
and dialogue on the management of innovation and technological change. Our definition and
analysis of TIM correspond to that of the AOM. Furthermore, TIM in this paper
encompasses the domain of the Entrepreneurship (ENT) Division of the AOM.
Entrepreneurs, or entrepreneurship, have often been regarded as a critical factor in driving
innovation or creative destruction since the publication of Joseph Schumpeter’s seminal
works.
Most participants in the field of TIM submitted their manuscripts to the Business Policy
and Strategy (BPS) Division in the AOM until 1987 when the TIM Division was set up.
Since then, more and more members of the BPS Division have transferred to the TIM
