Abstract

There are four types of career strategies, namely: occupational strategy, organizational strategy, stable strategy and heuristic strategy. The purpose of this study is to survey which one of these four career strategies will be preferred by the senior labors in the manufacture. Two variables: achievement motive, and organizational commitment, are used to investigate the correlation with the preference of the career strategies, to find out the different influence caused by demographic characteristics, and to identify the interrelations between these variables. 600 questionnaires were randomly sent to nine industries of 43 firms in Kaohsiung areas, and the usable return rate is 57%. An Analytic Hierarchy Process, ANOVA, and canonical correlation analysis are used to analyze the collected data. The results are as follows: The preference of the senior labors in the manufacture is for occupational strategy rather than organizational strategy, stable strategy and heuristic strategy. The canonical correlation between achievement motive and career strategies is mostly attributed to the negative relation between power needs and stable strategy. The canonical correlation between organizational commitment and career strategies is mostly attributed to two sources. One is the negative relation between organizational identification and stable strategy. The other is the positive relation between evaluation to the organization and stable strategy.
