103 NTU Management Review Vol. 30 No. 3 Dec. 2020 According to Archer’s definition, the morphogenetic cycle distinguishes three broad analytical phases: (a) a given structure (a complex set of relations between parts), which conditions but does not determine (b) that is, social interactions. Social interactions also originate in part from action orientations unconditioned by social organization but emanated from current agents, which in turn lead to (c) that is, structural elaboration or modification. Structural elaboration or modification is a change in the relations between parts where morphogenesis rather than morphostasis ensues. This study applies the interpretive qualitative methods to observe and gather data from three Taiwanese companies in the information electronics industry. All three companies adopt enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. This study divides the data collection into three phases. The first phase focuses on the background information of ERP adoption, which includes: (1) the ERP implementation strategy, the role of the IT department, and defining user groups; (2) the main function of ERP in the company, the scope of system adoption in the organization, and users’ attitudes toward the system after adoption; and (3) evaluation of the effectiveness after ERP system adoption. The second phase of data collection focuses on understanding the users experience about the structural features of ERP system. The third phase focuses on users’ response to ERP system requirements and the role of users in the adaptation process. In addition, in the second and third phases, I also document user attitudes towards the discrepancy between their expectations of the systems and the real systems they use daily. The main source of data is face to face and telephone interviews. The average time for each interview is approximately 40 minutes. A total of 41 interviews is conducted in 4 years (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012). I also collect data through documentation, onsite visits, and participant observation; transcribe all audio-recorded interviews into texts; and take field notes after observations and onsite visits. This study sets the “unit of analysis” on two levels, including: (1) the structural features of technology, and (2) users interaction and structural modification. First, “the structural features of technology” is to understand why technology begins to adapt, and what conditions and restrictions technology has on users. Second, “users interaction and structural modification” is to understand the interaction between users and the structural changes they cause when they face the pre-structural features of technology. In addition to the above analysis unit, this study converts all the relevant data (including interviews, written documents, field observations, participant observations, etc.) obtained into text files. Then, this study organizes the contents of the data in two
