191 NTU Management Review Vol. 29 No. 1 Apr. 2019 Construct Outsourcing Vendor Selection Criteria for Business Intelligence English Summary The real-time analysis and warning functions of business intelligence (BI) facilitate managers to conduct business operations effectively and make adequate decisions. According to the survey report of Gartner (2015), BI is prioritized by firms that plan to invest in information technology, and that the establishment and management of BI has been continuously regarded by technology leaders as a critical management topic in the future. Under the incentive of reducing costs and increasing profits, firms are faced with greater pressure to properly manage their core operations. They must obtain information on the market structure and competitive landscape to make management decisions quickly. The analysis function and real-time data compilation capability of BI facilitate firms to conduct forecasting and reduce risks; hence, BI is considered an essential investment of information technology. Therefore, the establishment and development of BI is expected to be a crucial research topic in the future. In recent years, various firms have outsourced the establishment of information systems to external vendors because of the increasing complexity of such systems, and because they want to focus on developing their core abilities and reduce capital and labor investments. A rule of thumb regarding this practice is that when a firm cannot provide more favorable quality and prices than do their competitors for a service, it should consider outsourcing the service to a vendor. Therefore, the firm can utilize the existing economies of scale and experience of the outsourcing vendor to attain high service quality at a lower cost. According to the aforementioned assertions, outsourcing can fulfill the two major objectives of firm management, namely, to focus on core competitive ability and to reduce the cost on managing information technology and manpower. Furthermore, selection of outsourcing vendors is essential to the success of outsourcing practice because an adequate vendor can reduce related risks. Therefore, how to select a suitable outsourcing vendor as the strategic partner is critical to firms.
