For future research, it should be interesting to see if our results hold in other industries, or whether industry characteristics moderate our suggested relations. Secondly, the measures we used for firm capabilities—namely, number of patents and value added to sales—may not have captured the full spectrum of firm capabilities, and it is important for future research to use other alternatives such as financing and advertising capabilities to further examine this issue. In closing, as the topic of inter-organizational networks has become increasingly important in strategy and organization management studies, this study attempts to contribute to the literature by considering important contingencies when it comes to performance implications of external networks. While more efforts are needed to understand the complex nature of inter-organizational collaborations, this study represents an important step forward and opens up future research possibilities.
