Hypothesis 1 (H1): Ex t e rna l ne tworks have a po s i t i ve impac t on f i rm performance. Hypothesis 1a (H1a): External R&D networks have a positive impact on firm performance. Hypothesis 1b (H1b): External supply chain networks have a positive impact on firm performance. Hypothesis 2 (H2): Firm capabilities negatively moderate the relation between external networks and firm performance. Hypothesis 2a (H2a): Firm technical capabilities have a negative impact on the re l a t i on be tween ex t erna l R&D ne tworks and f i rm performance. Hypothesis 2b (H2b): Firm manufacturing and marketing capabilities have a negative impact on the relation between external supply chain networks and firm performance. Hypothesis 3 (H3): The equity-based governance modes positively moderate the relation between external networks and firm performance. Hypothesis 3a (H3a): The number of equity-based external R&D networks is positively associated with a firm’s performance. Hypothesis 3b (H3b): The number of equity-based external supply chain networks is positively associated with firm performance.
